The 43rd Academy Award took place at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Loa Angeles on the 15th April 1971. The winning film of that year became The French Connection, directed by William Friedkin. The film also won in the categories Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay Adaption (Ernest Tidyman), and Best Editing (Jerry Greenberg). The film became the second one in succession to portray a police officer as the main character. In addition, the picture became the first R-rated film to earn an Oscar in the category Best Picture.

William Friedkin received the Best Director award. It is noteworthy that at the age of 32, William Friedkin became the youngest director ever to be presented an Oscar to. His picture The French Connection represents a crime film full of suspense.

The Best Actor Award was presented to Gene Hackman. Before that the actor was nominated twice. His third nomination proved to be victorious. In the film Hackman played the part of an obsessed, fanatic, hot-tempered and world-weary narcotics police officer Jimmy Doyle who works undercover. Gene Hackman had had two nominations in the past as Best Supporting Actor for the picture Bonnie And Clyde in 1967 and for the film I Never Sang For My Father in 1970.

Anti-Vitnam War activist Jane Fonda was honored with the Best Actress award for her part in Klute. The actress Jane Fonda became the first of the famous Fonda family to be presented to an Oscar.

As concerns the Best Supporting Actor Award, Ben Johnson became the owner of an Oscar in this category. The Best Supporting Actress Award was presented to Cloris Leachman. The actress played the part of Ruth Popper, the middle-aged, depressed and neglected wife of a high-school basketball coach.

It should be noted that at the ceremony in question, 82 year-old film legend Charles Chaplin was honored with Honorary Oscar after his self-imposed exile of many years in Switzerland. Charles Chaplin received the Honorary Award for “the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century.” In his film career the actor was nominated six times. His only Oscar was received for Best Score for Limelight in 1972.

Mia Wasikowska

Mia Wasikowska (14 October, 1989) was born and brought up in Canberra, Australia. Her mother is a photographer, Pole by origin, and her father is a painter. Mia often accompanied her parents as they went on travels across Europe with their gallery rounds. From the age of 9 to 15 Mia Wasikowska received training of ballet. However, when Mia was 14 years old, she made up her mind to drop the trainings. In Mia’s opinion, physical activity was affecting her self-respect. Soon she took a great interest in acting, as this art allows an actor or actress to investigate life’s incompleteness.

In 2004, Mia Wasikowska played her first part in the Australian soap opera All Saints. Two years later, the actress received a role in the movie Suburban Mayhem. Mia was nominated for this role in the category Young Actor’s AFI Award. She also acted in some short films, and in a horror film Rogue.

Mia’s talent for acting was highly appreciated in the United States. Her part in HBO’s In Treatment delighted many critics. In addition, the actress was complimented for her perfect American accent. Mia’s first American movie was Defiance.

In June, 2008, the actress was awarded to an Australians in the category Film Breakthrough Award. Mia Wasikowska acted the supporting part of Pamela Choate in the indie movie That Evening Sun, opposite Hal Holbrook. Mia’s acting enraptured the director of the film. In 2009, the actress received nomination for a Best Supporting Actress Independent Spirit Award for the given film.

In 2008, Tim Burton confirmed Wasikowska’s candidacy for the leading role in Alice in Wonderland. She acts a 19-year-old Alice who comes back to Wonderland. Such film stars as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway played in this film as well. After acting in Alice in Wonderland, Mia Wasikowska headed a cast in the comedy The Kids Are All Right. She acts the daughter of a couple of the same sex. She and her brother go in search of their biological father.

Subsequently, Wasikowska signed on to head the female cast in the film Gus Van Sant’s Restless. It is noteworthy that the actress agreed to have her long hair cut specially for the role. In May 2010, Mia Wasikowska signed on to play the title part in the film adaption of Jane Eyre.

National Lampoon’s Vacation

National Lampoon’s Vacation is a comedy which was shot in 1983. The director of the picture is Harold Ramis. Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, Dana Barron and Anthony Michael Hall played the leading parts in the film. The supporting cast of Vacation includes comedians John Candy and Imogene Coca, model Christi Brinkley and Jane Krakowski.

National Lampoon’s Vacation gathered more that $61 million in the US having the budget of $15 million. In 2000, the film was ranked among greatest comedy films of all time according to the voting of Total Film magazine readers. The film took the 46^th place.

The plot of the film runs as follows.

Clark Griswold decides to drive his family to Wally World (America’s Favorite Family Fun Park) which is situated in Los Angeles. The main goal of Clark is to spend more time with his wife Ellen and his children Rusty and Audrey. The main character yields to no persuasion of his wife to fly. He wants to have more time for communication with his family. However his new car has not been arrived yet. Thus there is nothing else left for Clark to do but to agree to accept Wagon Queen Family Truckster. It should be noted that this car gives a lot of troubles to the family on the way.

Clark’s dreams connected with the pleasant pastime with his family are fated not to become realized. The family constantly gets into messes and their adventure is full of funny and sometimes very unpleasant incidents. Every character of the film contributes his/her mite in this journey. These are Uncle Eddie, Aunt Edna, temptress in Ferrari and the obese security officer.

Finally Griswold family reaches the destination station. But to their astonishment the Wally World Park is closed for two weeks. Beside himself with rage, Clark can not keep the situation under control. By threatening the security guard with a gun he demands to let his family in the park. The Griswolds are about to be arrested. Suddenly, the owner of the park, Roy Wally becomes deeply touched by the story of unpleasant experiences of this family and he allows them to enter the Wally Park in the capacity of his guests.

Academy Award Nominations 1981

In 1981 the low-budget film Chariots of Fire was acknowledged the Best Picture at the Academy Award ceremony. The picture was directed by Hugh Hudson. It received seven nominations and won four awards. Chariots of Fire got top honors in the categories Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Costume Design as well. It is noteworthy that the picture caused a great sensation. The plot of picture is constructed on the basis of the 1924 Olympics running event which took place in Paris. The main characters, Jew Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) and Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson) are Britain’s athletes, who are firmly resolved to get good results. The athletes are guided by their personal motivations.

The other picture presented at the ceremony, Reds, was nominated in twelve categories and it gained three Oscars. The awards included: Best Director (Warren Beatty), Best Supporting Actress (Maureen Stapleton), and Best Cinematography). The picture narrates about an American communist John Reed. Being a left-wing radical journalist, who wrote Ten Days That Shook the World, Reed takes a trip to Russia. His firm intention consists in getting the information about the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution at first hand on the streets of Petrograd. The film Reds was nominated in all four acting categories. However, only one of four actors won the acting award in the category Best Supporting Actress.

The winners for Best Actress and Best Actor became distinguished actors, who acted in the same film On Golden Pond. It was the fifth film in succession that had award wins in the categories Best Actress and Best Actor in the same film. Moreover, it was the only time when the actor, Henry Fonda, played with his real-life daughter Jane. Henry Fonda received his first Oscar for the part of an old man Norman Thayer. This Oscar was a well deserved award for Henry Fonda’s merits in film-making. It should be noted that Fonda, aged 76 at that time, became the oldest winner in the category Best Actor. 41 years earlier the actor was nominated in the category Best Actor for the part in the film The Grapes of Wrath. However he did not win at that ceremony. Undoubtedly, the gap of 41 years between two nominations and the actor’s final win represents a record itself.

In 1982 the epic biography of one of the most famous Indian leaders, the Mahatma Gandhi, that was directed by Sir Richard Attenborough, earned 8 awards out of 11 eleven nominations. It was the first time when a British film received the largest number of awards. Although it should be mentioned, the film was financed by Columbia Studios.

The film won in the following categories: Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Art/Set Direction, Best Film Editing, and Best Costume Design. Sir Richard Attenborough received two Awards – for Best Picture, and Best Director.

Ben Kingsley was rewarded according to his deserts. His inimitable and excellent performing impressed on the public. Being half-Indian and half-English by origin, Ben Kingsley became the first South Asian actor to gain general acceptance at the ceremony.

Among Kingsley’s Best Actors competitors were such celebrated actors as Dustin Hoffman and Paul Newman.

The winner of Best Actress Nomination became Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice). It was her fourth nomination and second Oscar. The actress acted a war-wearied Polish refugee Sophie Zawistowska who went through Nazi concentration camps.

The other actresses who were nominated in the category Best Actress included: Julie Andrews (1964- Oscar winner); Sissy Spacek (1980 Oscar-winner), Debra Winger (first nomination), Jessica Lange (Supporting Actress Oscar Winner). Speaking about Supporting Actress category, it should be mentioned, that Jessica Lange became the winner for her performing as Julie in Tootsie.

As for the Best Supporting Actor category, Louis Gossett won an Oscar for his performing in the film An Officer and a Gentleman. It was a very significant award for Louis Gossett. He became the third Afro-American actor to receive an Oscar for acting. In 1939 Hattie McDaniel earned an Oscar for Gone with the Wind. In 1963 Sidney Poitier received the Best Actor Award for the film Lilies of the Field.

2008 Academy Award

The 80^th Academy Awards ceremony dignified the best films in 2007. 24 categories were presented at this ceremony. The producer of the ceremony was Gil Gates. The show was hosted by Jon Stewart.

On January 22 at 5:38 a.m. PST the Academy President Sid Ganis and actress Kathy Bates announced the nominees. Such films as No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood got 8 nominations each. During the ceremony the picture No Country for Old Men was in the lead by receiving 4 Oscars. Four years in succession no film got more than 4 awards.

Since 37^th Academy Awards it was the first time when the Academy awarded all the acting Oscars to non-American actors. These actors are: Daniel Day-Lewis (British)-(Best Actor) – There Will Be Blood; Marion Cotillard (French) – (Best Actress) – La Vie en rose; Javier Bardem (Spanish) – (Best Supporting Actor) – No Country for Old Man; Tilda Swinton (British) – (Best Supporting Actress) – Michael Clayton. It is worth mentioning that the actress Marion Cotillard was the second actress who was awarded to an Oscar for a non-English Speaking part. The first non- English speaking actress to receive an Oscar was Sophia Loren. Cotillard is also the forth actress born in France who earned an Oscar. The other French actresses to receive the Academy Honorary Award are: Claudette Colbert (in 1934), Simone Signoret (in 1959), and Juliette Binoche (in 1996).

The recipients of the award in the category Best Director became the Coen’s Brothers. It was for the second time when an Oscar was shared between 2 persons for one film. In 1961, Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise won Oscars for their picture West Side Story.

It should be noted that Robert F. Boyle, aged 98, became the oldest recipient of an Oscar.

In spite of low American ratings, the 80th Academy Awards ceremony was ranked high in Canada for the 2007-2008 television seasons.

Best Picture Academy Award 2010

The Hurt Locker is dedicated to the theme of Iraq war. It tells about a United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team. The film director is Kathryn Bigelow and the screen was written by Mark Boal. Being an embedded journalist Mark Boal could observe everything that happened during the armed conflicts in Iraq. It was decided to shot the film in Iraq in order to make the atmosphere of the film close to reality. Many Iraq refuges also made a definite contribution to film shooting by playing in the background.

The release date of The Hurt Locker was June, 26 2009. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards. It was awarded to six, such as Best Picture, Best Director, Directing, Film Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing. The Hurt Locker also won six Bafta Awards.

The plot of the film runs as follows. In 2004 Sergeant First Class William Lames becomes a team leader in Bravo company of a U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit. At that time William James took the place of Staff Sergeant Thompson who was killed in Baghdad.Sergeant Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge enter the team. Their task is to communicate with the team leader by means of radio which is placed inside his bombsuit. The mission of the new team is to inspect the locality of present day Iraq. At every step there a danger may be hidden in the form of bombs or sharp-shooters. Despite this fact the team tries to do the job well by making the city safer for Iraqis and Americans.

As the main characters disarm IED there some miscommunication appears between the main characters. Sanborn and Eldridge do not support the methods of their team leader considering them to be imprudent.

In some time James gives orders to his team to get on the tracks of three insurgents who are responsible for an explosion. Sanborn does not want to accept this order however soon he complies with the task. During the operation Eldridge is injured.

After an unsuccessful mission to disarm a time bomb Sanborn can not restrain and he tells James that he can not endure the war tension. His best wish is to leave Iraq. Soon James finishes his mission of a team leader and he returns home to his family. But his being at home was not long. Shortly after James is seen serving with Delta company of an EOD.

The Hurt Locker is a great film. Kathryn Bigelow showed the real picture of the army conflict in Iraq. This is a story about three bomb technicians who discharged their duties even in such situations when their lives hung by a thread.

Sandra Bullock is one of the most high-paid and popular actresses in Hollywood. In 2010 she became the owner of Oscar as the best actress in the film The Blind Side. Sandra Bullock was also awarded to Golden Globe for the same film.

Bullock was born in Washington in 1964 in a family of a vocal coach (father) and an opera singer (mother). Sandra lived in Germany for 12 years where she studied ballet. Having a strong voice she played small roles in the performances in which her mother took part. In Germany Sandra attended English school and was one of the best pupils. After leaving school Sandra Bullock decided to become a lawyer and she went up to the North Carolina University. Some time later she quit the university and went to New York. In New York Sandra signed up to take a course of acting technique. She played some small roles and received good reviews from critics. Due to her talent the actress was invited to play in some television series. Bullock became very famous as an actress in 1994 after the releasing of the film “Speed”, one of the most successful action films ever shot. In 90’s Sandra consolidated her status of a good actress who managed on her own to attract audience in the cinema.

An incredible success came to Sandra thanks to such films as While You Were Sleeping, A Time to Kill, The Net. After the unsuccessful releasing of the film Speed 2 Sandra switched over to comedies and dramas. Such films as Hope Floats and Forces of Nature which were shot in the late 90’s received positive reviews.
Having played the leading role in the film Miss Congeniality the actress demonstrated her talent in the capacity of a comedy actress. The film was a great success and gathered about $200 million. Bullock was nominated for the Golden Globe Award. In 2004 Sandra played a supporting role in the film Crash. Some film critics considered that Sandra’s performance was even the best in her career.

In 2009 the actress starred in The Blind Side. The movie has grossed over $250 million. It has become the first film that passed the $200 million mark taking into consideration the fact that it had only one female high-billed star. For her play in the movie Sandra Bullock won the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. In the 82nd Edition of the Academy Award Bullock got Oscar as the best actress.
